7 ways to get out of your photography rut /// a guest post by Abigail

Hello... My name is Abigail. I am so happy to be guest posting today for Marcelle.  At first when I was asked to guest post, I was unsure of what to post about. I decided to stick to photography since that is how I originally became in contact with Marcelle.  (I had entered her photography contest earlier in the summer and it was a blast. I was so thrilled when I won.)

A little about me... I keep myself pretty busy, whether it's creating a work of art, reading, making my own clothes, or taking pictures. I enjoy blogging about fashion, life, and photography. I also love to make diy projects and tutorials. You can find me over at

A Guest Post by Kara

Have you ever thought that to be a good Christian you need to pray a certain way? Go to that certain church? Wear the "right" clothes?
Have you ever thought, "I am just not good enough to be a Christian!"
I think we all think that at times-we get so caught up in what others see and do we forget the true meaning of being Christians.
God doesn't look at our image-what we wear, how we pray, what we sing and do-he takes it to the heart. Where it really matters!
God does care about what we do in life-don't get me wrong-that doesn't mean we can do or say whatever we want but He strips down our image and sees the heart in the most wonderful way!!!
When your alone with God you have nothing to prove-you don't have to care about what others think.
That's why it's awesome to spend time alone with God-just you and Him.
A girl named Emily couldn't have worded it better-she said, "My 'status', or 'relationship' with God, isn't dependent on WHERE I go to church. It isn't based on HOW I choose to worship; whether I raise my hands, lie on the floor, or just stand with my eyes closed. In fact, these things have little value or importance in comparison to what Jesus sees. He strips down all the layers, he tears down the IMAGE, he looks beyond all that, and he sees my heart in its purest, most vulnerable form. My connection with Him is deepest in the quiet and intimate moments; when I'm alone in my bedroom and I have NOTHING TO PROVE and NO ONE to prove it to. That's when you know it's a GENUINE relationship. That is when your true character is revealed."

About me (The Author): I am 13 (almost 14) year old girl who likes photography, reading, blogging and I am very random at times!
I have two blogs-my main one  savedbygrace7.blogspot.com and my shop http://sunshineandpinklemonade.blogspot.com/p/pictures.html
Please feel free to check both blogs out and comment or follow and I am also planning a giveaway on Saved By grace in a couple of days. :D Thanks for letting me do this post Marcelle

Photography // Guest post by Jessie

Oh my heavens. I told Marcelle that I'd post yesterday, and I completely forgot! I am so sorry, Marcelle, and I hope you don't mind me posting today. {: Anyhoo, as the title said, I'll be posting about photography. But first a little about me:
My name is Jessie, in case you haven't figured that out. I'm blessed enough to be home-educated. I'm an amateur photographer (I plan on majoring in Photography when college comes around). I'm Wasian (a term for white/Asian people in my youth group) and proud of it. I. Love. Cheese. I'm involved in musical theatre, and it's awesome. I have six dolls that I 'play' with, and I'm not ashamed. The most important fact about me though is that I'm a Christian. I live by the grace of my Lord Jesus Christ, and no one else! You can see my blogs here and here.
Okay, now that you know more about me, onto the pictures! Here are some of my favourites that I've taken:

That's my eye! ^ I used a ton of eye colouring on Picmonkey to do the rainbow thingy.

Now... onto some tips!
First off: make sure your lighting is right. My favourite time of day for taking pictures is the late afternoon/evening--the sun isn't as harsh then, and it often results in much better pictures. You also get better sun-flares and bokeh later in day (see the mountain dew picture for an example--that was taken at around 5 or 6 in the evening.) Below are some examples of bad lighting {courtesy of Chloe for modeling}:

Here we have Chloe's face in full sunlight--not flattering at all, especially to vinyl!
Here Chloe's face isn't facing sunlight, but the back of her head is. Not too flattering, either.
Here we have perfect lighting, but as you can see, the background isn't very nice looking.

Next--as I sort of mentioned in the last photo, houses aren't the best backdrop.  I find it best to use nature as my backdrop. Here are some examples of good backdrops:
I wanted to take a picture of her tri-braid ponytail, and I nearly freaked out with excitement when I saw the bokeh in the background... ^.^
Not the most amazing lighting, but a very nice backdrop with no distractions. You can edit lighting, but you can't edit background! A little editing would make this picture-perfect. ^.^

One last thing: sun-flares and bokeh. These two things are very popular effects in the photography world. Sun-flares are simple enough--just wait until the late afternoon when the sun's behind the trees. Then, find a good spot in the leaves where you can see a flare made of the sun (hence the name 'sun-flare'). The longer the shiny lines, the better. Bokeh, though, is a different story. It's similar to a sun-flare, in that you'll get it the best when you have leaves and a setting sun. But it's much more difficult to attain. The best (and easiest) bokeh photos have something in focus in the foreground. So when you take a bokeh photo, try to have something in the foreground--you'll be very pleased with the results! Here's a sun-flare/bokeh photo so you can get the idea of it all:
Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed my post. Remember, you can find my photo blog here, and my doll/other random stuff blog here. I'm having a giveaway on my photo blog, so be sure to check that out! You could win an 8"x10" print of any of my photos, including the ones you saw in this post. I need one more entry for the giveaway to actually come through, so it would be greatly appreciated if you entered. Have a wonderful day!
much love,
~Jessie~
P.S. Thanks so much to Marcelle for letting me post here! I've never done a guest post before and this one was so much fun. (:

Guest Poster:Sierra

Hello all :)

My name is Sierra and I am so happy to be guest posting for Marcelle! Isn't her blog just lovely?  If you haven't followed yet, be sure to do so! Today I am going to be doing a tutorial for some Owl Earrings that I made.
First we will start out with what I'll be starting out with. :P (kinda obvious) One of the owl charms and a chain.
The chain is 9 links long (sorry for the poor numbering, DSI camera editing :P)
Next I will be taking four gold colored beads
Opening the first link of the chain, I slide the bead down onto it and close it again.
I'm using pliers that flatten and push and ones that turn the metal (useful for opening links and such.
Now there should be four beads on the bottom four links of the chain.
Hook the top link to the earring dangle piece.  Then close whichever one you opened. (you can open the earring loop like I did or you can open the top chain link.)
It might be easier to open the top link of the chain, because the owl charm goes onto that one. This is what the finished product should look like!
I hope you have enjoyed this guest post!

Blog de suite, Amour pour tous

(blog you later, love to all)

~Sierra blogs over at Keep Growing Beautiful. She is a bit random, cant talk until 2 in the morning over silly things, loves to read (and can be in bed reading past 2 in the morning) and also loves sing along to her ipod and the radio. She likes to make jewelry and write as well. She's hoping she will be able to post something meaningful (other than the many pictures she sighs over) because she wants to let every girl know how beautiful they are! Not to mention how much their Heavenly Father loves them! ~
